Todays question is what if humans never slept? Humans need their rest, or at least most of them do. Some sleep a meager three to five hours while others sleep a hefty nine to ten hours a day. Now what would happen if humans lost the need for sleep? A world where a human wouldn’t have the need for rest after a hard day of mental work. A world where a city truly never sleeps and neither does anywhere else.
How would this effect society as a whole? would we find ourselves working full 24 hour shifts without losing steam? Would we finish marvels in fractions of a time that it would normally take us to finish a simple accomplishment? The possibilities are endless but even with water the droplet follows a path as it falls. These questions I leave to you, the readers.

I used to always say, “man I wish I didn’t have to sleep I’d get so much more done”
I guess if we didn’t need it, we would not miss it, but there would probably be a lot more invention, progress, growth because of all the time we do sleep. I think it would inhibit our connection with the soul or the subconscious though. Sleep is when many of us escape and connect to our higher self, so I am guessing there would also be more crime and other negative non-spiritual events take place. So, I guess we will never know unless we come up with a way to “rejuvenate” in some other way (Maybe solar panels attached to our head?) LOL
Then wow players really wouldnt do anything but play wow.
@Kendra: “escape and connect to our higher self”? Which staves of criminal impulses? Please, do share your sources for these claims. I’m sincerely interested.
Sources, well there are plenty to support my hypothesis
First of all it would allow the criminals already in existence to spend more time focusing on their problems, their hate, their fears, depression, anger etc and that in itself could very well lead to more acts of violence. Even Criminals get a break from themselves during rest.
Hundreds of case studies have proven the benefits of meditation, yoga, mantra etc… and these are all forms of rest and connecting with the higher levels of consciousness. Science is proving every year that there is a definite connection between body, mind and spirit and now doctors are prescribing body/mind/spirit connection based therapies to help problems with anxiety, depression, fear and many more imbalances which are commonly present among those who display acts of violence. Here is a link that helps explain how and why people have “criminal impulses”. It is only one out of thousands that can be found. During sleep the body rests and the mind is able to obtain a deeper level (which some refer to as higher consciousness) during this time the mind can help solve issues with the psyche, both mental and emotional traumas. The only time most people take to make this connection is through normal rest. Meditation is practiced world wide today for people to help CURE imbalances. Meditation is simply mimicking what we do naturally in our sleep yet controlled to some degree.
Whether it be chemical, physical or spiritual, an imbalance can cause people to do negative things. Not all people who have an imbalance act out on criminal impulses but many do. Being in the Metaphysical Industry personally for many years as a counselor, metaphysician and studying the results of treatments given to clients I can say I have enough experience to make this hypothesis plus my many years of research and spending time with Master Teachers of Metaphysical based study. Really it is unknown for sure what would happen in a circumstance like that, where sleep was no longer needed. If people were not disciplined to the idea that they need to take the time to define that connection that exists within our being. I just don’t see that being a positive step in our progress as conscious beings as so many of us are already struggling with the basics like compassion and love.
Whoops, here is that link…

I never questioned the effectiveness of your excersises. I consider most of them more effective to our well being than most medical treatments, though perhaps with a less pseudo-scientific explanation as to why. What I was interested in knowing was how you, with such certainty, claim that we “connect to our higher self”, whatever that means, in our sleep. It just sounded as if you could back it up and I would be most interested in this.
To get back on topic.. I would argue that Kendra is right at least in that it would affect us greatly. We would surely adjust in time but the evolutionary processes which has lead us to the day and night cycle harmonic lifestyle we have today have most likely made us dependent on it. Just like how our dependency to certain amounts of minerals and substances are in direct relation to how big a part they are in our daily environment.
I believe that losing a need for sleep would have a greater impact on us, both physically, mentally and socially, than most would think at first thought.
I apologize if I am not clearly or properly answering your question. “Connecting to the higher self” means simply, connecting to the deeper parts of consciousness where self help and healing can occur. Which usually most people, unless they spend time doing exercises, don’t normally achieve unless through sleep (and often have no idea). Here is a small section of an article taken from the Young Investigators Journal: Several discoveries studying meditation practitioners have led to the “inflammatory reflex” theory. It suggests a direct link between the mind and the body, specifically the immune system. The theory has far reaching implications. As Kevin Tracey put it himself, “the literature shows that for centuries, doctors, monks, shamans, priests, acupuncturists and even laymen believed that individuals’ state of mind influenced their health. But nobody could explain how, until now”. The vagus nerve winds through the whole body and goes through all the major organs. Dr. Tracey and his team of researchers now know that the brain can send messages via the vagus nerve to suppress certain immune responses, most especially the release of the molecule TNF. —-end Now researchers are also finding that Meditation (also known as connecting to the higher self) has a direct impact on mental health. During meditation the brain goes through several stages of frequencies such as it does through sleep. The deeper the frequency, the more control we have over our minds and bodies thus controlling negative thoughts, emotions and other violent stimuli. This would be why hypnosis can be used to stop certain habits. There is really endless amounts of reserach, one could spend an entire lifetime researching just this one subject. You ask of my certainty on this subject and it would be like trying to prove to an atheist that God exists as most people go by personal experience and the research they do on their own. However. in this particular subject, I’d have to say that there is proof based on Scientific findings, and through Ancient practices that have brought us such amazing metaphysical therapies such as Yoga, Acupuncture, Rieki, Vedic Healing and many more. There is also substantial proof that we actually exist outside our body, which would also indicate the possible means of connecting to this source of energy which is also referred to as “higher self” But then again, I have done hands on research with Kirlian equipment and studied the effects of meditation and rest induced state of being and it’s affect on the human energy field. It’s amazing stuff, you should really look into it
